Seeing and separation
In a conversation with Maiko yesterday, we were discussing the ways that we might help the audience to have a sense of its own work perceiving the performances. One technique (not rare in the theater) is framing the "stage" with curtains. Another is to ask the audience to look through something. These photos of views from windows give a clear feeling of separation from the landscape seen. Many of them also give a strong sense of the vantage point. They tend to create a stirring sense of mystery (or at least real estate envy) for both the near and far landscapes...and a strong sense of the division between the viewer and what's seen.
